JONESBORO, Ill. -- A 76-year-old former southern Illinois pastor has been ordered committed to state custody for 51 years for molesting a 4-year-old child in 2010.Bill Vandergraph of Alto Pass on Friday was placed into the custody of the Illinois Department of Human Services, sparing him possible prison time.Vandergraph was sentenced on two felony counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and one count of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.Vandergraph last year was found mentally unfit to stand trial.His confinement will be re-evaluated every six months to determine if it should continue.Vandergraph once guided fundraising efforts to restore the Bald Knob Cross of Peace, a towering tourist attraction near Alto Pass.

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. -- A former soldier has been sentenced in Illinois to 15 years in federal prison after being accused of robbing a convenience store. Twenty-year-old Denzell Grant was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court in East St. Louis. That's where he pleaded guilty to felony charges of interfering with commerce by robbery and illegal possession of a firearm.Authorities say Grant entered Mac's One Stop Shop in southwestern Illinois' Swansea in October of last year. There, he pointed a handgun at a clerk and demanded money. Investigators say the two men struggled and the gun discharged. No one was injured.In addition to a prison term, Grant has been ordered to pay $10,500 in restitution.Grant was based at Texas' Fort Hood but was from South Carolina.

ROCKFORD -- A 114-year-old Civil War statue will be returned to downtown Rockford after decades at another location.The Rockford Register Star reports the statue of a Civil War soldier will be restored and moved to Veterans Memorial Hall.It was bought in 1900 by Winnebago County to decorate the entrance to a courthouse, which was demolished in 1967. The statue was stored for 17 years before being placed atop a pedestal at a street intersection, where it has stood for 30 years.Scott Lewandowski is manager of the county-owned Memorial Hall. He says it'll cost $130,000 to restore and relocate the zinc statue. Officials first are trying to find a grave for the skull of a Union soldier, which is in a 12-inch-square box beneath the monument.
